Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
